Condolences to Our Former Executive Director: Marco McMillian

 

Washington, D.C. - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brother Marco W. McMillian, Immediate Past International Executive Director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

On Tuesday, February 26th, members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity were informed that our beloved Bro. McMillian was reported missing. His car was identified at the scene of a major accident at the Tallahatchie-Coahoma county line in the state of Mississippi. As the news media has previously reported, Bro. McMillian has been running for the position of Mayor in his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Today, we have received the official word from the State of Mississippi that the body of our dear Brother has been recovered and identified by authorities in Coahoma County and by his family. It is an extremely sad day for those who knew and loved Bro. McMillian.

Memorial arrangements are still pending. We request that, due to the very sensitive nature of this situation and the ongoing law enforcement investigation, NPHC leaders and members worldwide limit public expressions (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Many of us are in shock and grief over this situation—you can best help his family and community by limiting the sharing of any information about the circumstances.

“Bro. McMillian made an incredible difference in his community and in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity through his involvement during his brief time on earth,” shares the Hon. Jimmy Hammock, International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. “He was our youngest and only the fifth Brother to serve in the capacity of Executive Director of the Fraternity (2007 – 2011).”

Bro. Marco McMillian was responsible for securing the first federal contract to raise the awareness of the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS on communities of color for the Fraternity. Additionally, he garnered new partnerships with organizations including City Year, Nationwide Insurance, the United States Marine Corps, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the National Council of Negro Women. In 2004, Ebony Magazine recognized Bro. McMillian as one the nation’s “30 up-and- coming African-American leaders less than 30 years old”.

His service to the Fraternity will always be remembered. We pray for peace and abound in these circumstances, knowing that God will comfort all who have been affected by his sudden departure from our midst.

Free Tax Workshop: A Success

With the tax season in full swing, the brothers of the Nu Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated along with Two Sister Tax Service from Somerville, Tennessee hosted a Free Tax Workshop on Tuesday February 12 at 7:00pm. We held the workshop at The Greater Springfield MB Church located at 407 South Madison St. in Bolivar, Tennessee.  Several people of the community brought many tax questions and got the answers that you need.

Phi Beta Sigma celebrates the life of Lillian Miles Lewis, wife of Bro. John Lewis

Lillian Miles Lewis, wife of U.S. Representative John Lewis, died Monday, December 31, 2012 at Emory University. She was 73.

“We are saddened by the loss of our dear brother’s beloved wife,” shares Hon. Jimmy Hammock, International President. “The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity unite in prayer, extending our deepest condolences in this moment of bereavement. Lillian was an avid and dedicated supporter of this great organization and the service Brother Lewis rendered on our behalf.”
Mrs. Lewis’ funeral services will be held on Monday, January 7th at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.

Close friend Xernona Clayton, the Conclave Atlanta Distinguished Women Award Recipient, said Mrs. Lewis had been ill for an extended period of time but encouraged her husband to continue with his career. “She’d kind of get on him about telling people she was sick,” Clayton said. “She didn’t want that to be the focus. She wanted him to do his work.”

President Barack Obama called Brother Lewis on Monday and expressed his condolences, the White House said.

She attended Los Angeles High School and received an undergraduate degree in English from then-California State College at Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Southern California. Mrs. Lewis developed a lifelong interest in Africa when she taught in a student program in Nigeria in 1960, returning later as a Peace Corps volunteer to teach for two years in Yaba, Nigeria.

Lillian Miles met her future husband when he was already a civil rights legend, and she played a key role in his transition to a career in politics. It was after taking a job as a librarian at Atlanta University that she met her husband at a 1967 New Year’s Eve party at the home of Clayton, a television personality and civil rights activist. Clayton and another movement veteran, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, played matchmaker. The Lewis were married in 1968. In his memoir, “Walking With the Wind,” Brother Lewis recalls his wife helped him decide to run for Congress in 1977 – a race he lost to Wyche Fowler – and became his chief advisor. “She had always been very involved in politics, much more than I. She had been a delegate (supporting Shirley Chisolm) to the Democratic National Convention in 1972, and she was constantly active in a variety of local circles and organizations. She was outgoing, involved, intelligent and great in front of an audience – she could make a speech. She also knew how to organize, how to chair a meeting, the nitty-gritty stuff. When she finally said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s go for it,’ that was enough. We were in,” Lewis wrote.

While Lewis forged his political career, Lillian continued her career as an educator with an international perspective. She was associate director of the Institute for International Affairs and Development at Atlanta University from 1984 to 1989, a job that called on her to help develop a major in international studies, with an emphasis in Africa and the Carribean. In a 1984 Atlanta Journal-Constitution story, she called the assignment “the moment I’ve been waiting for.” From 1989 to 2003, she was director of external affairs in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Clark Atlanta University.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by Brother Lewis and her son, John-Miles Lewis.

Zeta Phi Beta Sigma Together in DC

Washington, DC – Mary Breaux Wright, International Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. recently announced at a national teleconference that the sorority plans to convene its 2014 International Boule’ in Washington, DC. The meeting will coincide with the Centennial Celebration of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, which is also taking place in the place of its founding, the nation’s capitol.

Brother Jimmy Hammock, International President, was pleased and excited to hear that their sisters had decided to join them in this very special celebration: “Since her installation this past summer as Grand Basileus, Soror Wright has expressed her commitment to supporting her brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. Together, as leaders, we’re serious about promoting and celebrating our 92-year relationship as the only true brother-sister Greek-letter organizations. It makes perfect sense that our Zeta sisters will join us in Washington, DC, as we celebrate 100 years of service.”

Phi Beta Sigma plans to hold its 100th Centennial Celebration in July, 2014. The four-day gathering will bring together Sigmas from all corners of the globe to celebrate this major milestone. Details of the Centennial celebration and the Zeta Boulé are forthcoming.

A Word from Our National Director of Social Action

Washington, DC - December 19, 2012 – Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the Fraternity of James Weldon Johnson, A. Philip Randolph and John Lewis, a 98-year old, international organization of college and professional men of predominantly African American origin, in the aftermath of the senseless and horrific events of December 14th, in Newtown, CT, join the world community in expressing their love and prayers for the families and souls of the precious victims of this violent act and a call for protective action.

The methodical slaying of his own mother by her 20-year-old son with guns in the home and the continuing slaughter of 6 women and 20, 6-7-year-old children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT,  have shattered the hearts of a community and world, still reeling from this tragedy. With more questions than answers, we come together as God’s children in love and support for the brave and innocent victims, remarkable parents, responders, clergy and a nation that have admirably poured out their best in brotherly and sisterly acts of caring and comfort, and prayerful vigils participated in by President Obama.

A father, who sadly lost his 6-year-old son in this shooting carnage, touchingly expressed that he will endeavor to dedicate his life in service to others as a testament to the joy that he experienced in being a parent. This reminds us all of the true meaning and purpose for which we are on this Earth and, as God’s children, our responsibility to care for each other. It instills an imperative and sense of urgency to meet our collective responsibility of providing a safe, nurturing environment and opportunities for all children to learn, and grow as adults to love themselves, and love each other as God loves us.

The men of Phi Beta Sigma, collegiate and professional alumni, committed to Culture for Service and Service to Humanity, stand with all good and caring persons dedicated to providing a safe and loving environment for all children to learn in their schools, playgrounds, places of worship and their general community, and call on legislators, health care advocates and community leaders to fashion a way to ensure that the probability of these senseless tragedies ever occurring is minimized. We have a shared responsibility to make resources available to all who need them to grow in self-love and in respect for others and to encourage them in ways that they may achieve with a sense of fulfillment and joy. Full support and funding of mentoring programs by organizations, religious and civic groups with demonstrable success play an important role. Access to mental health treatment as needed is equally important.

In this Season of Hope, let us redouble our efforts and commitment to find answers to improve safety and opportunity for all in a spirit of love and service. In so doing, may we honor the memories, the promise and the eternal gifts that these young lives represent, by our continued service, respect and protection of the safety of all to purse their aspirations in peace and love.

Dear Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,

For far too long our country has been steeped in violence and lack of support and policies to help our children and families succeed. Teen dating violence is ending far too many young lives today. Violence in communities have devastated and traumatized children and families and to make matters worse, we are facing a high school student dropout rate in communities of color that affects the overall economy with a loss in hundreds of billions of dollars in productivity, decrease in property values as well as enormous social costs and disruption in social services. That’s why Men of Sigma will join together on September 18-20,2012 for Sigma Day on the Hill for three days of activities to bring national attention to the issues facing our communities and ending far too many lives before they are even started.

THE PROBLEM

“A comparison of Intimate Partner Violence rates between teens and adults reveals that teens are at higher risk of intimate partner abuse” and according to the Centers for Disease Control “Violence is a serious public health problem in the U.S. In 2007, more than 18,000 people were victims of homicide and more than 34,000 took their own life.” The highest rates of homicide are in the African-American community where homicide is the leading cause of death for black boys and men between the ages of 15-24. Researchers in a 2012 report released by America’s Promise also found that graduation rates for blacks fell behind every demographic by race; 91.8 percent of Asian students, 82 percent of whites, 65.9 percent of Hispanics and 63.5 percent of blacks.
These statistics paint a pretty dismal picture for what we are facing in our country, but our lives will not improve unless we do something about it.

Social Justice and Juvenile Court

On Sunday, July 29, at 10:00am, Nu Iota Sigma, along with the Social Justice Ministry at Gifts of Life Ministries, sponsored an informational session with State Representative Henri Brooks. She addressed issues concerning the Juvenile Court in Shelby County in Tennessee. Brooks shared information made public by the United States Justice Department who say, "Black youths arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, (are) much more likely than white juveniles to be jailed and tried as adults." Further, she mentioned the scathing review of 66,000 cases that revealed, "serious and systemic failures" in the way youthful offenders were treated. Also the review found:

• African-American children were treated "differently and harshly,"
• Black juveniles who were arrested in Memphis and surrounding Shelby County were twice as likely as whites to be detained in jail and twice as likely to be recommended for transfer to adult court, where a conviction generally brings harsher punishment.
• Failed to protect juvenile suspects from self-incrimination
• A pattern of youths arrested without a warrant not getting timely hearings
• Inadequate protections for detained juveniles who were in danger of harming themselves
• A tendency for jailers to overuse physical restraints on juveniles.

The brothers of Nu Iota Sigma stand with the children and their families and will continue to support efforts to correct this egregious problem in our Juvenile Court System.

National and local media outlets turned out to cover Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the National Action Network’s announcement of the organizations’ efforts to form a national coalition of civic organizations, academic institutions, politicians and concerned citizens to stand together to denounce and stop the culture of hazing.

On Thursday, May 31, 2012 a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. featured Brother Jimmy Hammock, international president, and Brother Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network. At this gathering, the two announced plans to eradicate the culture of hazing while preserving the legacy of Greekdom, service organizations and fraternal organizations through a major anti-hazing campaign. The multi-layered campaign will include print, audio and a professionally developed sensitivity training curriculum for Greek-lettered organizations, academic administrations, parents, students, and potential fraternity/sorority members. The newly formed coalition also announced its support of federal anti-hazing legislation and its plans to work with Congresswoman Frederica Wilson to strengthen her bill and help it become federal legislation.

"Hazing is an injustice to all of us," said Bro. Sharpton. "We want to raise awareness within organizations who may be harvesting this culture and let them know that hazing is unacceptable. Furthermore, we want to send a message to those who think it is tolerable for them to be hazed to belong."

Hazing is the practice of forcing new recruits to an organization to perform strenuous, humiliating and dangerous tasks to gain entry. Over the years hazing has become a mainstay for bringing new members into fraternities and sororities, but is practiced by groups of all types, including the military and marching bands on college campuses. Because of its emphasis on the use of physical and psychological abuse, hazing has been declared illegal by local, state and national law enforcement, and is an injustice that creates a culture of senseless violence.

"Institutionalized hazing has had a crippling affect on many lives for many years, " said Brother Hammock. "This initiative is a top priority of this administration. The leadership is serious about our efforts and the assigned task force is developing every opportunity to spread the message." September 6, 2012 will be National Anti-Hazing Day. Phi Beta Sigma collegiate chapters across the country will be required to host sensitivity training on their respective campuses. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will also hold a Town Hall Meeting on this anti-hazing campaign during the Serious Sigma Summit. The meeting is scheduled for August 11, 2012 at the Marriott Charlotte Executive Park, Charlotte, NC.

"The time is now and Phi Beta Sigma is starting a movement to eliminate the culture of hazing," said Brother Jonathan A. Mason, Sr., International First Vice President and task force chairman. "At the end of the day, Sigma’s main objective is to put an end to this divisive and destructive culture, which threatens to further decimate not only the African-American community, but also the wider society."

Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a past regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated discussed the importance of supporting and putting into law federal anti-hazing legislation which she has authored. The growing numbers of academic, social, civic and political figures supporting this effort and joining the coalition include Congressmen Edolphus Towns and John Lewis, Sigma members. Mrs. Paulette Walker, National First Vice President, speaking on behalf of Cynthia Butler-McIntyre, National President Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, proclaimed the sorority’s support of this effort. Other academic leaders included Scott Rokowski, Head of Sorority & Fraternity Life, University of Pennsylvania, Dan Robbins, Cornell Coalition and senior at Cornell University and Barbara Cheives, Converge and Associates, developer of the Anti-Hazing Curriculum.

The Brothers of the Nu Iota Sigma Chapter of West Tennessee congratulate our Soror Yalaunda Toliver-Taylor on the South Central Region of Zeta Phi Beta Inc., naming her 2012 President of the Year. She also received the Tennessee Director's Leadership Award. Under Soror Toliver-Taylor's leadership, her chapter (Chi Lambda Zeta) received awards for their Z-Hope activities and first place in the Scrapbook Competition, Moreover, the Zeta Friends, (the Amicae), took first place for Report of the Year that detailed their extensive community service and the Zeta youth groups also won awards and recognitions. We are proud of both Soror Tolliver-Taylor's and our Sorors' accomplishments. We celebrate their gifts and love for both Zeta and Sigma.

COLLEGIATE ADVISOR UNIVERSITY

COUNTDOWN TO COLLEGIATE ADVISOR UNIVERSITY (CAU) WASHINGTON, D.C. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is presenting the Collegiate Advisor University (CAU)  which will serve as the fraternity’s official training and certification process  for all alumni members who have a desire and/or are appointed to serve as collegiate chapter advisors. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has developed a comprehensive and functional training process  that will assure our collegiate chapters are receiving quality, timely and appropriate direction and advising.  The course curriculum was created with the goal of launching the participant’s success story as an advisor.  This will be accomplished through modules aimed at providing the building blocks to this success.  The modules that will be presented are as follows: SIGMA 1100: Launching Your Success Story: This module is a combination town hall meeting and  information session designed to acquaint the participant with the certification program,  Collegiate Advisor Manual and inspire attendees as they pursue or continue their career  as a collegiate advisor. SIGMA 2100: Foundations of Collegiate Advising: This module provides the  participant with the basics of advising collegiate chapters including best practices and styles to  utilize in order to be effective in the role of advisor. SIGMA 3100: Chapter Operations: Working Effectively Together:   This module provides the participant with methods and mentality to inspire motivation,  trust and a degree of harmony that are not only the characteristics of a world-class  organization but successful chapter. SIGMA 4100: Coaching and Development of Chapters: This module provides the  participant with the skills and methods to coach and develop collegiate chapters.  In this session the attendee will learn to realign improper behavior and reinforce positive ones. SIGMA 5100: Advisory Role in Risk Management: This module acquaints the participant  with the advisor role in the risk management of collegiate chapters. In this session the attendee becomes familiar with precedents, statutes  and procedures that shape how we administer the fraternity’s operation on collegiate campuses and  also anytime that the fraternity sponsors an event or it is inferred that they are sponsoring it. The second CAU will take place at the Serious Sigma Summit in Charlotte,  North Carolina on Friday, August 10th. All alumni members currently serving,  appointed to serve or that have an interest in serving as a collegiate advisor are  strongly encouraged to register, attend and successfully complete the certification process. The Collegiate Advisor University will convene at 8:00 am on the morning of August 10th  and will culminate with a graduation ceremony for participants.  In keeping with our commitment of “Going Green”, limiting our carbon footprints and keeping in  line with modern technology, participants are strongly encouraged to bring with them a laptop computer, netbook or tablet as the presentation materials will be loaded to thumb drives  and a limited number of print copies will be made available for distribution. Dress will be business casual.
